Manitoba’s Clocks Are Not Changing: What Manitoba Businesses Can Do to Prepare

Manitoba is officially leaving the seasonal clock changes in the past. Most current phones, computers and systems will adjust on their own through normal software and operating system updates. However, some schedules, systems and older applications may still need a quick review.

Why might some systems show the wrong time?

Many older systems have been set up with the assumption that Manitoba would continue to change its clocks, once in March, and once in November. Anything that still follows that old rule moving forward will end up an hour off schedule as of next week, unless addressed.

The highest risk for this is older software that no longer receives updates from its manufacturer, and any systems that do not receive automatic updates in any way.

What should Manitoba businesses prioritize?

Before November 1st, businesses and leaders should take a look at:

  • Windows computers and servers: Make sure each device is fully updated and has the correct Manitoba time zone selected. Devices that aren’t updating successfully won’t get the change.
  • Mobile phones: Current phones should update through your provider (Rogers, Telus, Bell MTS and others).
  • Microsoft 365 calendars and meeting rooms: Review recurring meetings and room bookings that span the date of the old clock change, especially with people or rooms outside Manitoba.
  • Scheduled systems: Check door locks and access control, parking lot and exterior lighting, timers, scheduled database processes and anything with date or seasonal timers.
  • Backups and scheduled jobs: Confirm any job set to run at a specific local time still runs when expected.
  • Older or unsupported systems: Legacy applications, ERP systems and phone systems without vendor updates may not handle the new time rules.
  • Clocks and signs set by hand: Devices like electronic road signs still need someone to confirm they show the right time.

If a system is business-critical, runs on a schedule, or is no longer supported by its manufacturer, review it before the change. There may be other systems in your environment affected too.

Frequently asked questions

Will my phone update for Manitoba’s time change automatically? Yes. Current cell phones should get the update through normal provider updates from Rogers, Telus, Bell MTS and others.

Do I need to change the time on my Windows computer? No, as long as it’s fully updated and set to the correct Manitoba time zone. A computer that isn’t updating successfully may show the wrong time.

Which business systems are most likely to show the wrong time? Older systems that no longer get vendor updates, and anything that runs on a clock or schedule, such as door locks, lighting timers and backup jobs.

Will meetings with people outside Manitoba be affected? Possibly. Review recurring Microsoft 365 meetings and room bookings that involve people or rooms in other provinces or states.
