How to Read MSP Rankings: what the MSP 501 and CRN MSP 500 Actually Measure

In 2026, SolutionsIT was named to two independent North American rankings of managed IT providers: the Channel Futures MSP 501 and CRN’s MSP 500, in the Pioneer 250 category. We’re very grateful for this recognition, but this article isn’t an award announcement. Because awards don’t prove that an IT provider is right for you. What they can provide is evidence that there’s a real operating model behind the promises. Here’s how to read rankings like these, whether you’re evaluating us or anyone else.

What was SolutionsIT recognized for?

Two separate publishers, two separate methodologies, in the same year. The Channel Futures MSP 501 is a numbered global ranking; SolutionsIT placed at No. 329 worldwide, among the top 20 in Canada, and was the only Manitoba-based MSP on the 2026 MSP 501. CRN’s MSP 500 is a different recognition from a different publisher, The Channel Company; SolutionsIT was named in its Pioneer 250 category, which recognizes managed service providers focused on small and midsize organizations. One is a numbered ranking, the other a category recognition. The distinction matters, and providers who blur it are already telling you something.

A practical note before you click anything: both publishers are industry trade outlets, and their full lists sit behind registration forms built for IT companies rather than buyers. We link them as primary sources, and everything a buyer actually needs from them is summarized below.

What does the MSP 501 evaluate?

The MSP 501 is a quantitative ranking, now in its 19th year, built on verified financial and operational data that companies submit: recurring revenue mix, revenue growth, profitability, and operational efficiency. It is not a popularity vote. The 2026 winners averaged more than $32 million in revenue, roughly 10 per cent annual growth, and nearly 60 per cent recurring revenue. In plain terms, the ranking asks whether a company runs managed services as a disciplined business or as a collection of hourly work with a subscription stapled on.

What does the CRN Pioneer 250 mean?

The Pioneer 250 is the category of CRN’s annual MSP 500 that recognizes managed service providers focused on the small and midsize business market, and it’s the category SolutionsIT was named to. The full MSP 500, featured at crn.com/msp500, is divided into three categories: the Pioneer 250; the Elite 150, for providers serving mostly midmarket and enterprise customers; and the Security MSP 100, for MSPs with cloud-based security expertise. For a Manitoba organization, the Pioneer 250 is the relevant category: it’s recognition within the part of the industry that serves companies your size, not enterprise outsourcing.

What these rankings do not prove

Now, let’s be real. A ranking cannot tell you whether a provider is a fit for your organization, how their team behaves on a Tuesday when your line-of-business software breaks, or whether their agreement covers what you assume it covers. It also says nothing about providers who aren’t listed: these lists evaluate only the companies that apply, so absence tells you nothing either way. And a ranking is a snapshot of the year that was measured, not a warranty for the year ahead.

If a provider leads every conversation with their awards, ask what else they’ve got.

Why does operational maturity matter to you, anyway?

So why mention rankings at all?

Because taking on that kind of evaluation requires things that directly shape your experience as a client. A business that ranks on financial and operational discipline generally has to have documented standards rather than tribal knowledge, real reporting rather than reassurance, enough staff depth that your service doesn’t depend on one hero, and investment in security and continuity tooling that a thin operation can’t afford.

Those are the same four things we tell every buyer to test for: whether recurring issues actually get removed (efficiency), whether controls and gaps can be shown rather than described (security), whether recovery has been tested rather than assumed (continuity), and whether evidence exists for insurers, auditors, and boards when they ask (compliance). Rankings are one external signal that a model like that exists. There’s no substitute or shortcut for checking.

What you should still verify, award or no award

The same evidence we’d tell you to demand from anyone: the recurring issues eliminated last quarter, the date of the last tested restore, your gap list against a written standard, the name of the person who owns your roadmap, and the agreement pages that say what’s included. Frequently asked questions

What is the MSP 501?

The MSP 501 is an annual global ranking of managed service providers, published under the Channel Futures banner and now in its 19th year. Placement is based on verified financial and operational data that companies submit, including recurring revenue mix, revenue growth, profitability, and operational efficiency.

What is the CRN MSP 500 Pioneer 250?

The Pioneer 250 is one of three categories in CRN’s annual MSP 500, published by The Channel Company. It recognizes managed service providers focused on the small and midsize business market, which is the part of the industry that serves organizations the size of most Manitoba businesses.

Is SolutionsIT on the 2026 MSP 501?

Yes. SolutionsIT placed at No. 329 worldwide on the 2026 MSP 501, among the top 20 in Canada, and was the only Manitoba-based MSP on the list. SolutionsIT was also named to CRN’s 2026 MSP 500 in the Pioneer 250 category.

Does it matter if an IT provider is not on these lists?

Not on its own. Both lists evaluate only the companies that apply, so absence tells you nothing either way. A provider’s real evidence is what they can show you about your own environment: written standards, real reporting, tested recovery, and clear accountability.

Should awards decide which IT provider you choose?

No. Treat a ranking as evidence that a real operating model exists behind the promises, then verify that evidence directly: the recurring issues eliminated last quarter, the date of the last tested restore, your gap list against a written standard, and the name of the person who owns your roadmap.

The honest close

The recognition isn’t the reason to hire us. It stands as third-party evidence that there’s substance behind our business model, gathered by people with no stake in our sales pipeline. The reason to hire any provider, us included, is what they can show you about your own environment: implemented, tested, documented, and reported.

If you’d like that conversation, a no-obligation second opinion or agreement review is the easiest place to start. [Contact SolutionsIT]

Pocket Line: an award is evidence of a model, not proof of a fit. Ask for the evidence either way.
